1.3.2.1 Congenital hernias
Here the hernia sac is present in some cases at birth as an anlage. In the case of a congenital inguinal hernia, for example, a finger-shaped protrusion of the peritoneum, projecting through the internal inguinal ring into the inguinal canal, serves as hernial sac. In the congenital umbilical hernia the hernial sac projects outwards through the incompletely closed umbilical ring (a ring-shaped opening in the tissue around the navel). In general, congenital hernias occur already during infancy or at a young age.
